Power and the Powers is divided into three parts. Part 1 addresses the many powers that oppress; part 2, the powers that stand with the oppressed against the oppressors; and part 3, God as the one Power who overcomes all others. This is an arbitrary business, to say the least, for Walter Brueggemann has never really been concerned about the lowercase-p powers. Yes, all the chapters address current events and the underlying spiritual powers at work within them. But the focus here, as in all of Brueggemann's work, is the one Power before whom every knee will bow and every tongue confess.

Walter Brueggemann was William Marcellus McPheeters Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary until his death in 2025. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, he is still regarded as the premier Old Testament interpreter and biblical theologian. Among his many publications are Prophetic Imagination and Old Testament Theology

Conrad L. Kanagy is professor of sociology at Elizabethtown College, Pennsylvania. He has an undergraduate degree from Wheaton College and a PhD from Penn State. He is the author of eight books and numerous scholarly articles. His primary area of expertise is American and global Christianity.
